Advanced international canyoning course Ropes and team management – 22-29 June 2025
22 Juni - 29 Juni
Module objectives and content:
The target audience for the course is an international audience of canyoneers, already
proficient in canyon progression techniques as team members, who are interested in
becoming riggers and team leaders – All training and lectures will be held in English.
The module will take place over eight full days of activity. We will spend at least 3 days doing
some dry exercises in a rock quarry. If the weather conditions will allow it, we will descend
at least six canyons with increasing difficulties.
We will teach the course attendants the techniques developed by the Canyoning School of
the Italian canyoning association. The school has over 20 years of history and performs a
continuous work of selection and editing of the technical solutions after risk assessment of
accidents and near misses.
The instructors of the school are members of the association and perform their duty pro
bono as volunteers, with only expense reimbursement. We teach because we believe in
sharing our knowledge and working for higher safety and awareness in the practice of the
sport.
The maximum number of attendants for the course will be 8 people and the minimum
number of instructors at any one time 2. Additional supervision may be present during the
activities. When descending canyons we will typically divide into 2 autonomous groups of 4
attendants each, in order to maximize the training opportunities.
The module will begin with a roundtable on the international canyoning signals to introduce
the standard (FIC) that will be used for the module. We will then introduce the selection of
gear that has been adopted as a standard by the Italian system to show the function and
position of each element and move outdoors for a clinic on basic technique to familiarize
with each other.
The module will then continue with an alternate succession of dry exercises and canyon
descents. In the first few days we will work on the execution of the single techniques. As the
course progresses we will use tutoring to provide more and more autonomy to the course
attendants. We will work on tactic and strategy rather than technique. We will explore the
algorithm for the selection of the most appropriate solution to rig a waterfall depending on
context and risk assessment.
Toward the end of the module, we will use simulations to develop the course attendant’s
leadership skills and their ability to manage unplanned emergency contingencies.
At the end of any practical activities, we will have a debriefing to share the lessons learned
and to stimulate a process of self-reflection and analysis. We strongly believe in the use of
this tool to encourage personal growth and group development.
Each course attendants will bring one 60m rope to set up the descents for the group. Both
EN1891 and static ropes are accepted. During the module we will illustrate the
characteristics of each material, their limits and the way this affects the rope management
techniques.
The last day for signing up is on the 10th of June. A copy of the bank transfer receipt must
be sent via email to segreteria@aic-canyoning.it and to 2506@aic-canyoning.it
Before the start of the course send to the email address of the course a medical certificate
